#8 Buenos Aires Wins Bid to Host 2018 Youth Olympic Games

On July 4th, Argentine Capital Buenos Aires won the election to host the third Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2018. During a secret ballot vote by International Olympic Committee (IOC) members in Lausanne, Medellin in Colombia received 39 votes to Buenos Aires’ 49 on the final ballot. On an initial ballot, Buenos Aires earned 40 votes, Medellin 32 and Glasgow in Scotland 13.

It was a surprise to most as Medellin had been the favourite to win after the Argentine bid received poor technical scores on an evaluation report.

Singapore hosted the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010 and Nanjing, China will host next in 2014. A winter version of the Youth Games were held in Innsbruck, Austria in 2012 and are scheduled to be contended in Lillehammer Norway in 2016.

The YOG were the brainchild of former IOC President Jacques Rogge who aimed to promote healthy lifestyles for the world’s youth who have been spending more time on their digital devices and less time playing sports.
