Top Olympic Bid Stories of 2010: #6 Munich 2018 Battles Farmers Over Olympic Land Use
After issues appeared to be resolved between environmentalists and Munich 2018 regarding land use for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen snow venues, in December unsatisfied farmers in the region threatened to complain to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) if the bid wasn’t withdrawn. 59 farmers claim that their land lies within a planned security zone, as required by the IOC.
Bid representatives dismissed the threats, claiming that negotiations were still underway and alternative plans were available.
Siegfried Schneider, Minister at the Bavarian State Chancery said “the remaining open questions about land will be cleared up and won’t damage the bid”.
