In September, rumours spread about the ill health of Munich 2018 CEO Willy Bogner. But the bid committee reassured that the Olympian, film maker and sports fashion entrepeneur would continue to lead the bid.

But just days later, Bogner reported that his “condition is unfortunately more serious than previously thought”, and that he would be stepping down from his leadership role. In his place Katarina Witt, the Chair of the bid committee, would assume the high-profile role of representing the bid internationally.

While on the surface this may have seemed a setback for the bid, Witt’s new leadership role would provide a valuable boost. the double Olympic gold medal-winner, actress, author and model is extremely popular in Germany and would help raise domestic support as well as putting a recognizable face on the international campaign.
