Top Olympic Bid Stories of 2009: #9 Joint Hiroshima and Nagasaki Bid For 2020 Olympics

For the second year, GamesBids.com is releasing our list of Top Ten Olympic Bid Stories for 2009. These stories, from the mainstream to the obscure, impacted the course of Olympic bids and formed an interesting plotline for 2009.

#9 – Hiroshima and Nagasaki Propose Joint Bid for 2020 Olympic Games

Just days after Tokyo lost it’s bid for the 2016 Olympic Games to Rio de Janeiro, the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki proposed a joint bid by their cities for the 2020 Olympic Games. The bid would be designed to remember the only two cities to suffer from nuclear attacks and to help the movement towards nucear disarmament.

While the motives are compelling, this bid would have probaby been more symbolic than real. Currently the IOC does not allow the submission of joint city bids, and the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) would have to nominate the bid and they have already told the mayors that there must be more substance behind their proposals. Still, the bid moved forward with a feasibility study and organizers were looking for international support.

On Friday, the JOC decided to reject the bid in order to abide by the IOC Charter. Japan may wait until 2011 to nominate its 2020 bid.

Story #8, which contains the quote of the year – will be released tomorrow.

#10 – The Maldives to bid for the 2024 Olympics
