The Regional Municipality of York formally submitted a letter of intent Friday to national bid organizers Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) to bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Regional Chair and CEO of York Region Bill Fisch said in a news release “this is an incredible opportunity to showcase the Regional Municipality of York as a truly world-class community. The Region is the ideal setting for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in every way imaginable – we boast one of the most multicultural diverse populations in the world: our economy has become increasingly globally-focused and is growing by Leaps and bounds, and we wish to help foster sporting excellence and support world-class, young athletes”.
York Region is one of six Regional Governments in the province of Ontario, Canada and is in the geographic heart of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). It covers 1,756 square kilometres. The region includes nine area municipalities: the towns of Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Whitchurch-Stouffville, the Township of King, and the City of Vaughan.
Commonwealth Games Canada will announce its candidate city in December and the Commonwealth Games Federation at its general assembly in Sri Lanka will select the 2014 Commonwealth Games host city in the fall of 2007.
