The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has decided to include women’s boxing in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) said Tuesday.
Ching-Kuo Wu, the association’s president, issued a statement that said, “this demonstrates the continued growth in popularity of women’s boxing which I wish to continue promoting even further. Female boxers have reached world-class levels over the past couple of years and the Commonwealth Games will be another opportunity for these athletes to show their talents”.
There will be three weight divisions in Scotland – flyweight (50 kg.), lightweight (60 kg), and middleweight (75 kg).
It’s the first time women’s boxing has been included in the Commonwealth Games. Prior to the London Games women’s boxing was criticized by those who said it was not appropriate for women to box.
Wu said he would push the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for at least six weight categories at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
