Beijing has begun working on a $76.69 million project to build 33 windmills that will provide electricity for the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games.
Construction of the first of the wind generators on the outskirts of the city is now underway and is expected to eventually supply enough electricity to 100,000 homes, reports China Daily.
The new power stations will help China meet its commitment that one-fifth of the electricity for the Olympic venues is wind-generated, said the newspaper. Other wind farms in neighbouring provinces are also expected to contribute to the Olympic effort.
China Daily quotes an official saying “Beijing has never had any large windmills before, much less wind power stations. Wind power could arouse people’s awareness of energy conservation and environment protection”.
