Organizers of the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games say delays by Australian company Multiplex in completing London’s new Wembley Stadium will not damage the city’s bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Multiplex has announced that the stadium, which was to be completed in December, will now not be ready until at least next March.
AAP reports that while the new Wembley will be completed long before 2012 and able to host the Olympic football final, the publicity about the construction delays came at an awkward time for London 2012, because the host city announcement is being made next month.
London 2012 communications director Mike Lee told the London Times, “we know that there are staging agreements with Wembley that would be fulfilled if we were to host the 2012 Games. (Wembley construction) is a matter for the relevant parties, it is not an issue for the bid”.
Meanwhile, one of London 2012’s key environmental partners is this year’s winner of the prestigious International Award from the Banksia Environmental Foundation, Australia.
The BioRegional Development Group won the award in recognition of its visionary work on developing cost effective solutions to sustainable living, which reduce the global ecological footprint.
BioRegional’s flagship initiative is One Planet Living developed in partnership with WWF. According to a London 2012 media release, BioRegional and WWF-UK have used this concept to underpin London 2012’s vision for achieving the first sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Games –Towards A One Planet Olympics.
