As outlined in Washington’s 2012 bid addendum recently submitted to the International Olympic Committee, a number of sports will be located in Baltimore and elsewhere in Maryland, including baseball, cycling, gymnastics, modern pentathlon, sailing, shooting, soccer, softball, triathlon and Volleyball, should the city host the 2012 Summer Games.
Northern Virginia will host events such as basketball, canoe/kayak, equestrian and water polo.
Nine sports will move to new venues to reduce travel time by almost 45 per cent from the Olympic Village to the venues and place 85 pr cent of the venues within one mile of a rail transit station.
According to a Washington 2012 press release, hosting the Games will leave a $200 million Olympic Legacy Fund to support youth programs, host elite sporting events and help maintain Olympic venues; a $10 million Cultural Heritage Fund to help upgrade important area cultural and historical facilities; and will create a $6 million Regional Disabled Sport Foundation.
Washington’s bid committee expects an operating surplus of $92 million and the Olympic and Paralympic Games are expected to provide an overall economic contribution of $5.3 billion to the region’s economy.
The bid builds on the region’s existing 460 miles of rail line, three international airports, and extensive highway system to ensure smooth transportation for the hundreds of thousands of visitors expected for the Games.
