The Joongang Daily reports that prosecutors said they will request a warrant to detain South Korean International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Kim Un-yong, on bribery and embezzlement charges.
Kim, wearing a white mask and a navy blue hat, entered the Seoul District Prosecutor’s office Monday morning avoiding reporters’ questions.
He was questioned by prosecutors about a new allegation that they had leads indicating Kim might have received bribes from a sports clothing company.
A prosecution source told the newspaper, “we found out that a high-ranking official at the Korea Sports Council received $30,000 from a sports clothing company in bribes in exchange for giving the company a licence to supply clothing to the council”.
According to the Korea Herald, the company’s sales nearly tripled the following year due to its improved brand awareness.
Kim denied that allegation as well as details about other allegations although he had already acknowledged unspecified wrongdoing.
The prosecution had already secured a warrant to arrest him but the probe was delayed after he was admitted to hospital.
