Vancouver 2010 Transportation Plan Unveiled

At a media briefing Tuesday, Vancouver’ 2010’s $86.7 million transportation plan was unveiled.

According to the plan, spectators travelling the Sea-to-Sky Highway from Vancouver to Whistler would pay an extra $20 round-trip in addition to the cost of event tickets. For people taking shuttle buses within Vancouver or Whistler, the transit cost would be included in the price of the bus ticket.

Alpine and Nordic fans would have to take buses or a combination of high-speed ferry, bus and rail to the venues.

About 35,000 people, paying a total of $1.4 million, are expected to make the trip each day.

Private vehicles, apart from those belonging to local residents, would not be permitted on the highway during peak hours.

Also 40,000 people would move around Whistler each day of the Games and by comparison about 195,000 people would be moved around Vancouver venues and medals ceremonies each day.

Visitors to the Games would ride on 1,500 TransLink buses, 1,500 motor coaches, and an additional 300 buses chartered from other North American cities.

The plan also calls for 257 SkyTrain cars, three SeaBuses and 16 high-speed passenger ferries, many charted specially for the Games.

Seven-car commuter trains are planned to shuttle about 12,000 spectators a day by rail to the downhill ski events, to avoid clogging the highway with buses at the Creekside turnoff.
