Vancouver 2010 Speed Skating Oval Could Be Moved

Cost overruns could force the venue for Vancouver 2010’s speed skating oval to be changed from Simon Fraser University (SFU) to other locations, including the University of British Columbia. But a final decision has not yet been made.

Reports say the budget for the oval, located on Burnaby Mountain, is $68 million, and SFU officials believe the total could exceed $80 million because of rising construction and labour costs.

Construction of the oval isn’t scheduled to begin until 2005.

Also, the original plans to use the indoor complex to train future Olympians may have to be scrapped. SFU is wondering whether other uses might be more practical, including a multi-purpose field house.

There may be other changes made for skiing in Whistler.
