CTV reports the Sea to Sky Highway, a vital road link for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, was reopened to traffic late Saturday a day ahead of schedule, following a massive rockslide.
The highway, called the Achilles Heal of Vancouver’s bid, goes from Vancouver to Whistler, site of the ski venues at the Games. The province of British Columbia has budgeted $775 million for upgrading.
Crews have been working around the clock to clear the roadway, blasting away unstable rock and huge boulders, and using heavy equipment to move the rubble.
Mike Oliver, the project’s chief engineering technician, said much of the rock will be trucked away for use in construction.
