Vancouver 2010 Design Contest Is Criticized

The Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) has announced a nation-wide competition to create a logo for the 2010 Games.

VANOC is inviting professional designers and design students from across Canada to a conference in Vancouver on June 9 and 10. The conference will detail the history and significance of Olympic design and the values behind it, and outline the vision and logo design expectations for the 2010 Games, says a VANOC press release.

John Furlong, chief executive officer of VANOC said, “the new emblem will be the cornerstone of 2010 as we go forward. In the end, we will have a (logo) that will be known all over the world”.

But the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada is upset because the contest doesn’t follow a professional code of ethics. According to CP, spokesman Matthew Warburton said it is against the society’s rules “for our members to participate in unpaid, speculative proposals and that is what this contest is”.

He said the committee should follow a similar process to architecture where different companies submit proposals.
