Vancouver 2010 Design Competition Draws More Than Sixteen Hundred Entries

When the September 15 6:00 p.m. EDT deadline approached for Vancouver 2010’s design competition submissions, the organizing committee for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games had received 1,609 entries from every part of Canada and from Canadians living as far away as Switzerland, Tokyo, Florida and California.

John Furlong, head of Vancouver 2010 said, “this was a national competition, so I am pleased to report that we received entries from every region of our country from coast to coast to coast”.

VANOC decided that a competition open to Canadian graphic designers and artists was the best way to find an emblem that would capture the values and ideals of the 2010 Winter Games and represent them to the world.

He said, “we also knew it was a unique opportunity to profile the excellent creative talent we have in this country, so I am delighted that Canadian designers embraced this competition”.

The next step is to have an international panel review all submissions and put forward its recommendations to VANOC. Vancouver 2010’s organizing committee will make the final decision and the winner of the competition will receive $25,000 and two tickets to the Vancouver 2010 Opening Ceremony.

It is expected the new logo will be launched in early 2005.
