A groundbreaking ceremony has taken place four years ahead of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, at the site of Vancouver’s Olympic Village – Southeast False Creek. During the Games the village will house about 2,800 athletes and officials and following the 2010 Games it will be converted to serve as a mixed-use community – an example for sustainable living.
Jack Poole, chairman of the Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee said, “the Vancouver Olympic Village will be the ‘home from home’ for athletes and officials from around the world and we intend to make it as memorable an experience as possible for these special guests”. He added, “equally as important, the village housing will be developed afterwards into a vibrant new community for more than 2,000 residents following the Games”.
Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan called it “a day of celebration. Southeast False Creek will be a model community of economic, social and environment sustainability and will contribute to our reputation as one of the world’s most liveable cities”.
Vancouver will host the 2010 Games February 12 to 28, 2010. The mountain events will take place in Whistler, which will also host the 2010 Paralympic Games from March 12 to 21, 2010.
