USOC Waiting To Name New CEO

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) may not name a permanent successor to former CEO Lloyd until after the Athens Games in August 2004, said acting President Bill Martin.

“There’s a lot going on now, so I am not going to be in a panic mode to bring anybody else in here”.

Martin said he would like to find a CEO who would stay at least through the Athens Games, but would name an interim CEO if a group of senators wants.

Meanwhile, the resignation of three U.S. Olympic Committee executives in the past month have freed up about $1 million in salaries that can go to sports groups and athletes.

Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, one of three senators investigating the USOC, said, “that’s where it should have gone in the first place”.

Campbell has called a truce in ferreting out any wrongdoing by the USOC. He is now in a mode of “watchful and hopeful waiting” reports USA Today.

But he is still calling for the resignation of chief financial offer Early Reese.

Campbell said information given him and the other senators by USOC staff could indicate criminal fraud, but he told AP that pursuing charges against current or former officials would be harmful.

“It might be better to cut our losses rather than drag the committee through all this negativism that’s out there”, he said.

He also said he would share some of the information with Martin in hopes it would assist the leadership changes.
