USOC Reform Underway

It now seems certain that the 124-member United States Olympic Committee (USOC) board of directors will be downsized significantly to as few as nine members. The USOC’s 10-member Governance and Ethics Task Force proposed sweeping changes that would create a smaller nine-person board of director’s and relegate the old board to an assembly with an “advisory and communication role” – and they would still retain the right to vote for United States bid cities for future olympic Games.

Other proposals by the task force suggest that day-to-day control of both domestic and international operations be put into the hands of the chief executive officer. They want these changes in place by March 1 of next year and a new CEO by May, 2004 which would leave just a few weeks before the Olympic Games in Athens.

Earlier in the week, an independent commission created by Congress recommended a nine-member board without the creation of a special assembly for the current 124-member board. It suggested that these changes be made by the start of 2004.
