USOC Continues San Francisco Tour

The USOC evaluation team continues its tour of the San Francisco area with a visit to Sacramento to view the proposed rowing and cycling venues.

In San Francisco they will tour the Moscone Convention Center, the proposed site of fencing, handball preliminaries, table tennis, tae kwon do, and indoor volleyball; Marina Green where the cycling venue would be; Aquatic Park, the site of triathlon, and Pacific Bell Park, the baseball venue.

In Oakland and Berkeley they will visit Jack London Square where the Olympic Festival would be; Kaiser Auditorium, weightlifting; Network Associates Coliseum for soccer; Oakland Coliseum Arena, the proposed site of basketball; and finally the University of California.

The inspection team ends its visit tomorrow with a news conference before leaving to inspect Los Angeles, the last of the eight cities.

Meanwhile, using the USOC team as a backdrop, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors began consideration of a controversial measure commending China for securing the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Supervisor Leland Yee held a City Hall hearing on his proposed resolution that would put San Francisco on record praising the Chinese government for winning the 2008 Olympics for Beijing. And Mayor Willie Brown, who met with the Olympic Committee, said in an interview later he has no problems with the selection of Beijing. “China deserved it”, said Brown.
