International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and USOC vice president Bob Ctvrtlik is the chair of the USOC evaluation committee that will inspect the two cities hoping to become the U.S. candidate for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games – Chicago and Los Angeles.
USOC chairman Peter Ueberroth said at the announcement, “our commission will be comprised of 11 individuals from across our country with specific complimentary expertise in international sport and bidding that will empower us to make effective final judgments on the relative qualities of our two bid cities”.
He added that USOC CEO Jim Scherr will accompany the commission on its visits to both cities “so we can gain the value of his perspective”.
Ctvrtlik said, “the exhaustive evaluation process we have put these cities through…will ensure that we enter the international competition for the 2016 Games with the best prepared and most qualified U.S. bid in history.
The panel will visit each city for three days – Los Angeles from February 28 to March 2 and Chicago March 5-7. During the inspection each city’s bid committee will give presentations on the major themes in the candidature file – Olympic Village, Olympic Stadium, finances, transportation, security and vision of why each city wants the Games and the legacy they will leave. There will also be a half-day venue tour, a private dinner with city and bid officials, and a press conference.
Following the visits the committee will submit a report to the USOC Board of Directors.
The USOC board will meet April 14 when each city will make a final presentation and a U.S. candidate for the 2016 Games will be selected.
