Delegates at the 34th annual convention of the British Columbia and Yukon Territory Building and Construction Trades Council (BCYT-BCTC) voted unanimously to support Vancouver’s 2010 Olympic Winter bid.
Tom Sigurdson, BCYT-BCTC executive director said, “this is resounding backing from workers’ representatives from around the province. The trades want to see the 2010 Winter Games go ahead here in British Columbia. Skilled workers want to ensure that infrastructure development to support the Games is built to the highest quality standards on safe construction sites and built on time and on budget”.
The BCYT-BCTC represents 13 construction unions with a combined membership of 35,000 members.
Ken Georgetti, president of the Canadian Labour Congress, and Tony Tennessy, president of the Operating Engineers Local 115 are members of the 2010 Bid Board of Directors.
Jack Poole, 2010 bid chair and chief executive officer said, “our skilled work force in B.C. and our ability to build first class facilities are important assets that will help us present a winning bid to members to the International Olympic Committee. Our plans will demonstrate how labour, business, government and first Nations are all working together to produce a truly memorable Winter Games experience, eight years from now”.
