The Chicago Tribune reports that with the United States Olympic Committee’s (USOC) encouragement, USA Track & Field (USATF) submitted a last minute bid last month for the 2011 Track & Field World Championship that could make way for a U.S. 2016 Olympic bid.
The newspaper reports that failing to show interest in staging the largest world championship of any Olympic sport could have had a negative impact on a U.S. bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
The U.S. didn’t designate a potential host city for the 2011 worlds, which will be awarded by the international track federation next spring. According to the newspaper it leaves open the possibility for the USATF to put forth the same city the USOC will pick as its 2016 bid city, provided the U.S. considers a 2016 bid.
