U.S. Elections Could Affect 2012 Games Bid

The London Telegraph reports that the outcome of the U.S. Election could have a bearing on London’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

One International Olympic Committee (IOC) member is reported to have said that because George Bush’s war in Iraq is to unpopular with IOC members, New York’s bid for 2012 “does not stand a chance”.

But if Kerry wins the election and is able to resolve some of the problems in Iraq, some of that anti-American sentiment could evaporate and then New York could start to win votes, reports the newspaper. The IOC member added, “if they can get out of Iraq it could all change”.

According to the Telegraph it would be bad news for London. The newspaper writes “the bid strategy is based on the calculation that Moscow will be eliminated in the first round, followed by New York in the second. Then London, as the only voice of the English-speaking world, will be able to take on Paris and Madrid and beat them. If New York makes a comeback, London’s calculations become more complicated”.
