U.S. Attorney General To Tour Salt Lake Venues

U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft is spending the weekend touring Olympic venues and inspecting security preparations.

Ashcroft will meet with Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, Olympic organizers and state and federal security officials. He will also tour each of the Olympic venues and be briefed on security preparations at each location.

Justice Department spokeswoman Lori McMahon said, “the trip has been designed to give the Attorney General a first hand look at the ongoing security measures for the Olympics. How is this venue secure and what are we doing? And if a crisis happens at this particular venue, what do we do and how do we take care of that?”

It’s the first time Ashcroft has visited the Olympic venues. Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge visited Salt Lake City and the venues earlier this month.

Ashcroft is scheduled to begin touring venues Saturday morning.
