Reuters reports that North and South Korea have reached an “unprecedented” joint agreement to back PyeongChang’s bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
Officials told International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge Friday that part of the historic deal a unified North and South Korean team will take part in 2014, but this should be in place by the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games.
Bid Chairman and former President of the United Nations General Assembly Han Seung-soo said, “we will be submitting as part of our final written presentation in January that both governments have agreed to back the bid. It was agreed that we will field a unified team in 2014. But if we can overcome some technical problems there is a very high possibility that this will happen for 2008 in Beijing”.
PyeongChang is competing against Salzburg Austria and Sochi Russia to host the 2014 Winter Games.
