Turin Opens Subway Line Ahead Of 2006 Games

Turin’s Mayor Sergio Chiamparino inaugurated the first line of the city’s new subway system Friday with a test line ahead of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, which begins February 10-26.

The Associated Press reports that the Mayor and about 200 guests rode one of the trains on a line that will be part of the new subway system which is not expected to open to the public for another three months.

The entire subway line is not expected to be completed until the end of next year.

ANSA news agency reports that construction has not yet started on the second line. The subway system will be the first in Italy with automated control systems, which means the trains won’t have drivers but will be piloted by computers overseen by supervisors in a control room.
