Turin Awaits Winter Olympic Games

It’s beginning to look a lot like the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin. Red and blue are the predominant colours of the Games, according to the official Turin 2006 Web site. Red stands for passion while blue represents the colours of ice, sky and night.

And it’s all about the numbers – 8,000 square metres of PVC will be applied to the exterior of buildings, more than 150 km of cloth will cover barriers, parapets and fencing; more than 7,000 banners in an area of 22,000 square metres; 44,000 square metres of PVC will cover the grandstands; 82 3-D logos are being placed in what is called “strikingly visible positions” (towers, ski jumps, etc.); and more than 28,000 posters for internal decoration.

The creative staff of Turin 2006 used two main concepts for the Winter Games – passion, which according to Turin 2006 is a value that expresses the character of Italy and the Italians; and participation, typical of the Olympic spirit.

Representing those concepts is the graphic expression of the “piazza”, (the square}, a perfect metaphor which, according to Turin 2006, is Olympic and Italian at the same time, expressing the Games’ ideals of friendship, fair play and mutual respect.

The piazza also provides a modern rendition of the “Italian spirit” and is a place where athletes and spectators will mingle and meet.
