Turin 2006 Update

Turin 2006 reports that the facilities for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games are on track. Work on the Oval, the Pala Isozaki centre and the Stadio Comunale is going non-stop. The northern wing of the Oval, the speed skating stadium, was finished recently.

The Palavela, the short track venue, was tested successfully in January and will be completed by June.

The training ice rink in Corso Tazzoli will be finished by the end of May, and the ice will be laid at the Pala Isozaki, the ice hockey centre, in September with the interior and exterior completed in October.

Work is also going non-stop at the Stadio Comunale, the stage for the Olympic ceremonies.

Vehicles to transport people during the Games will include hydrogen scooters. The scooters are environmentally friendly and give off water, not exhaust fumes.

A delegation from Vancouver 2010’s Winter Olympic Games is in Turin to observe preparations for the 2006 Games. Maureen Douglas, a member of Vancouver 2010 said, “we’d heard about the urban renewal projects and the intention to take advantage of the Games to change the city’s density. But we had no idea about the beauty of the city’s architecture and the charm of its history”.

And finally, the Turin 2006 organizing committee’s Sport Production department is about to start auditions for dancers and acrobats who will become cheerleaders for the Games. “Light the fans’ enthusiasm” become a 2006 cheerleader” is the slogan for posters promoting the recruitment campaign. Applicants must be over 18.
