Turin 2006 Negotiating Funds To Cover Budget Shortfall

The Associated Press reports that Turin 2006 organizers said Thursday they are negotiating a transfer of funds from a public agency to cover a budget shortfall estimated to be more than $243 million. The agency Sviluppo Italia is linked to the Economy Ministry that promotes business development and investment.

Officials were meeting in Rome to finalize a transfer of funds from the agency.

Before there’s a vote on a provisional budget for the 2006 Games organizers must cover the budget shortfall. Under its charter the organizing committee is not allowed to receive money directly from the government to deal with the budget gap.
