The Associated Press reports that an “Olympic Truce” aimed at avoiding strikes before and during the Turin 2006 Winter Olympic Games was approved Friday by Turin labour unions.
Giorgio Rossetto, local secretary of the Uil union said, “guaranteeing social peace in Torino in a difficult time such as this will not be easy. To do so we are counting on the desire and will for dialogue among our traditional opponents”.
There have been protests from environmental groups opposed to construction of a high-speed rail link to France recently.
And Olympic organizers are hoping to avoid a repeat of the scene at the Alpine skiing world championships in Bormio last winter when a walkout by a small Milan union of TV workers caused the men’s giant slalom to be postponed by a day.
Meanwhile the 60th session of the United Nations General Assembly has passed the Olympic Truce Resolution put forward by Italy on behalf of the IOC.
The Resolution, which goes into effect prior to the Turin 2006 Games, was sponsored by 190 member states of the General Assembly.
