Tromsoe 2014 To Continue Despite Government Withdrawal

Despite the Norwegian government’s refusal to back Tromsoe’s bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, Tromsoe organizers said they intend to continue with their bid in the hopes that a pro-Olympic government or parliamentary majority will take office in national elections next year, reports the Associated Press.

The deadline to bid for the 2014 Games is February 2006.

Norway’s Minister of Culture and Churches Valgerd Svarstad Haugland, who is also responsible for sports, said Friday the government would not offer economic guarantees. The total cost of the Games was projected at more than $2.4 billion. He said the government had a parliamentary majority behind its view not to provide a guarantee for Tromsoe’s bid.
