Toronto’s Olympic Bid Seeps Into Garbage Debate

Toronto City Council’s debate on shipping its garbage to the Adams Mine near Kirkland Lake took a twist Tuesday, when Councillor Mike Tzekas made a motion to send a copy of the Adams Mine contract to Toronto’s Olympic bid committee for its comments, particularly as it pertains to the environment.

Tzekas had read in a To-Bid newsletter that part of Toronto’s bid was based on the protection and preservation of the environment. But he said in this case “the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing”.

He added that if the city voted on the contract, every environmentalist in the world “will have our butts”.

Tzekas said city council shouldn’t ratify the Adams Mine contract until it heard what the bid committee says.

Tzekas, who repeatedly said he supported Toronto’s bid for the 2008 Games, is concerned about what will happen when Toronto’s competitors, Beijing and Paris, hear about the issue. He also wants to find out if the federal government would be under pressure not to fund the Games if Toronto votes to send its garbage to Adams Mine.
