Toronto Bid Best Technically, But Beijing Still Favourite

An editor of an influential Olympic newsletter who was interviewed by the Toronto Sun, says Toronto has the best technical bid for the 2008 Games, but if forced to bet on which city will emerge as host, he would bet on Beijing.

Ed Hula, editor of Around the Rings, has toured all five cities bidding for the 2008 Summer Games. He said, “Toronto is doing very well compared to the other cities I’ve seen”, but he doesn’t think it’s strong enough to overcome sentiment that it is Beijing’s turn.

Bob Richardson, chief operating officer for TO-2008 said, when it came down to the vote, the favourites have lost the last few Olympic bidding wars. He said, “I’m not sure that history tells you that it holds a lot of weight”.

Hula said, “there’s a real viewpoint on the IOC that it’s time to bring the Games to China and to other places in the world that haven’t had the Games before”.

Hula is writing a report on his findings in his subscription-based newsletter, which goes to most of the voting members of the International Olympic Commission.
