Torino City Council Approves 2006 Games Venues

The Torino City Council has approved the construction of the venues for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.

Comunale stadium will accommodate 12,000 spectators and will be the site of the main hockey rink. After the Games it will become an area for sport and leisure activities. The facility will be connected to the Lingotto area by a subway that will surface near the Maratona tower. Palazzo a Vela, where the figure skating events will take place, will be the site of cultural events after the Games.

The speed skating venue will be built in the 12,000-square-metre Lingotto-Fiat Avio area and will become a pavilion for trade shows and congresses after the Games.

All construction plans will be finished by spring 2002 and construction will start in the second half of 2002.
