Top Austrian Olympic Official Quits Over Financial Allegations

Heinz Jungwirth, Austrian Olympic Committee secretary general, resigned Sunday following criticism in the national media regarding allegations of financial wrongdoing following Salzburg’s failed bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Austrian Olympic Committee president Leo Wallner said, “it was Heinz Jungwirth’s own decision to leave. We had a long conversation and I got the idea he didn’t want to continue”, reports the Associated Press.

Austrian media reportedly blamed Jungwirth for being involved in a financial scandal following Salzburg’s failed Olympic bid. Media reports said 150,000 euro disappeared in financial transactions between the country’s national Olympic aid association and a private company handling possible sponsors for the 2014 Games.

The Austrian Olympic Committee said according to two independent audits there were no irregularities in the company’s accounting, although a public prosecutor in Salzburg was still investigating the case.
