Tokyo and Madrid have now been added to the list of applicant cities for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
Japan’s cabinet has approved Tokyo’s bid and agreed the government will pay up to half the building costs.
Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara is quoted by the Kyodo news agency saying that hosting the Olympics “is a national project, which will leave tangible and intangible fortunes to Japanese citizens. We will make the utmost effort for a successful bid”
The cabinet has decided that Japan’s central government would bear up to half the cost of building major facilities for the Games, reports Kyodo.
Meanwhile Madrid also met the deadline and is now a formal candidate for the 2016 Games.
Madrid’s Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon informed the City Council’s Cabinet that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially accepted Madrid’s bid.
Manuel Cobo, Deputy Mayor of Madrid, said, “we can announce that Madrid is officially an applicant city to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games”.
