The Tokyo metropolitan government launched a council last week comprising former members of Japan’s Olympic teams and intellectuals to outline Tokyo’s Olympic strategy for the 2016 or 2020 Summer Olympic Games. The group is scheduled to release a report sometime early next year, providing “ideas unique to Tokyo as an Olympic host city”, reports the Yomiuri Shimbun.
There have been reports of a one trillion yen large-scale redevelopment plan to build a main 100,000-set Olympic stadium in Yoyogi Park, Shibuya Ward, Tokyo and an Olympic and an Olympic Village to house athletes.
The city of Fukuoko, Tokyo’s rival along with Sapporo for the Japanese bid, earlier called for the involvement of other parts of Kyushu in its bid to host the Games but changed its mind and is now considering the urban area of Fukuoka for a possible Olympic venue.
Fukuoka Mayor Kotaro Yamazaki has emphasized that his city will map out an Olympic project that will be “less costly” with the construction of temporary facilities and the utilization of existing facilities.
