The Yomiuri Shimbun reports that according to sources the Tokyo metropolitan government’s campaign to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games will feature a compact and economical plan using existing and temporary facilities.
Temporary structures will be used as venues, and the press centre and existing sports facilities will be fully utilized to keep costs low.
An overall plan for hosting the Games will be submitted by the government to the Japanese Olympic Committee in June.
The media centre and venues for swimming and other events will likely be temporary structures, says the newspaper.
But according to International Olympic Committee (IOC) rules residential buildings in the athletes’ village must not be temporary structures. The residences would be commissioned to the private sector on the premise that they would be sold as condominiums when the Games are over.
The main Olympic stadium will have to be built. There are two plans – a National Stadium in Shinjuku Ward will be reconstructed, or the Chichibunomiya rugby ground in Minato Ward will have to be demolished and the new venue built on the site.
Other venues, most of which will be within a radius of 10 kilometres, will use existing facilities.
