Toronto’s bid committee has launched an education program through Toronto and Canadian school boards, which involves curriculum-based visual and performing arts programs themed on Olympic Values, culminating in a youth gathering on May 23.
The gathering will mark the launch of an arts and culture festival called “Expect the World” which is scheduled to last until June 23 and will culminate with an event at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
And a new partnership program has been created with the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation and Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment & Training. Six Aboriginal internship positions have been created within the Bid office to give individuals hands-on experience in areas that are integral to the bid process.
Interns from Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick will work in Community Relations, Marketing and Merchandise, Communications, Paralympic and Venue Plan, as a Team 2008 Assistant, and in Finance and Technology.
Meanwhile, last summer’s popular van program is now located in various malls, where anyone can sign up to volunteer should Toronto get the 2008 Games. During the month of March the vans will be in Erin Mills Town Centre, Mississauga on March 3; Woodbine Centre, Rexdale on March 17; The Promenade Shopping Centre in Thornhill on March 20; Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill on March 21; Fairview Mall, Toronto on March 22; the Toronto Eaton Centre on March 23; and Georgian Mall in Barrie on March 31.
