Time Capsule To House London 2012 Memorabilia

The burial of a time capsule containing London 2012 memorabilia marks the beginning of the construction of the Wembley pitch – considered an important milestone in the development of the new stadium that will be the venue for the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games football finals.

London 2012 Chairman Sebastian Coe attended the ceremony and other dignitaries included 1948 Olympian and London 2012 Ambassador Dame Mary Glen-Haig.

Dame Glen-Haig said, “Wembley Stadium means so many things to so many people and the items selected here just capture the stadium’s rich Olympic heritage alone. Nearly sixty years ago Wembley Stadium hosted the historic 1948 Games – quite possibly the first great national celebration in Britain in the post-war years.

“This year the stadium also played a significant part in helping bring the Games back to London with its role in the successful 2012 bid.

“The items going into the Time capsule today pay homage to these monumentous events in or sporting history and represent an acknowledgement of Wembley’s role in both the 1948 Games and the London 2012 bid”, she said.

According to the London 2012 Web site each memento will be sealed in a special revolutionary airtight anti-oxygen sack to prevent corrosive damage, before being locked into the time capsule.
