The Tibetan Youth Congress has begun an indefinite huger strike at the Turin Olympic Games. The protestors are asking Olympic organizers not to hold the Games in China until Tibet is freed. Beijing has won the bid to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.
Meanwhile the fifth round of talks between the Chinese authorities and the envoys of exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama has begun in Beijing. A special envoy of the Dalai Lama, accompanied by a senior aide and other Tibetan government-in-exile representatives, arrived in China Wednesday to resume the talks on Tibet that began in 2002.
The Dalai Lama’s office said he was pleased that the present round of talks had resumed. They issued a statement: “for the last four meetings, the envoys have had very candid and serious discussion with their counterparts in the Chinese leadership”.
Tibet watchers say there have not been any signs of progress.
