In response to a promise from the Paris 2008 bid to stage beach volleyball in front of the Eiffel Tower, Beijing is considering holding the beach volleyball competition in Tiananmen Square, site of the 1989 massace of pro-democracy demonstrators.
The idea came about during a recent inspection tour by the International Federation of Volleyball.
Gao Shenyan, a Chinese Volleyball Association official was quoted in the China Daily as saying “it will be good for the sport if the competitions are held in the square”.
