Thousands of “netizens” across South Korea and the world flooded GamesBids.com Thursday in support of the PyeongChang 2014 Olympic Bid.
The massive support was inspired by the DongSaMo online support group, an organization that was originally formed for the 2010 Olympic bid and now exceeds 120,000 members – according to PyeongChang’s bid Website. Messages were placed on various Korean-language discussion forums that challenged fellow Internet “netizens” to vote for PyeongChang on GamesBids.com’s online poll asking readers “What city do you think leads the 2014 Olympic bid race?”
Within a few short hours several thousand votes were cast and PyeongChang’s rank in the poll skyrocketed over 30 points overtaking Sochi, the bid that has held the lead for several months. At the time of this publication the votes are still coming in fast and PyeongChang sits at 72%, Sochi at 20% and Salzburg 6%.
Earlier in the day, the GamesBids.com Web site was noticeably slower as it tried to cope with unpredented traffic levels.
PyeongChang’s bid committee is currently in Guatemala preparing for the Olympic bid election to be held next Wednesday.
