Thailand More Serious About A 2016 Olympic Bid

Following its success at the Athens 2004 Games where three athletes from Thailand each won gold medals, the country’s Tourism and Sports Minister was quoted in The National newspaper that Thailand would be planning to bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

By the end of September the Thai government set up a committee to conduct a feasibility study into a proposed Thai bid.

And, according to Reuters, next week Thailand’s deputy Prime Minister Suwat Liptapanlop and International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Nat Indrapana will visit IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland to discuss with the IOC a possible 2016 bid.

Bangkok was eliminated from the bid for the 2008 Summer Games because of concerns over transportation and venues.

Indrapana said the visit to Lausanne would be followed by a feasibility study, after which a decision will be made whether or not it will make a bid, reports Reuters.
