Its called Team 2010 and it’s a new group that’s been formed to campaign for Vancouverites to vote “Yes” in February’s Olympic plebiscite.
Members of the group include business people, politicians and athletes that are part of a broad-based grassroots movement from throughout the community.
The group is chaired by businessman David Podmore. The two vice chairs are Olympic athlete Charmaine Crooks and Stephen Darling, chair of Tourism Vancouver.
Podmore said, “this isn’t a business initiative. The group that’s assembled represents such a broad cross-section that one person in the room said in their 40 years in Vancouver they’d never ever seen a group like this, and the composition of a group like this assembled in a room together”.
“One thing you should know about me is I’ve never been involved politically and I don’t intend to”, said Podmore. “But I think this is a time when the whole community has to come forward and do what we can to put us over the goal line in Prague on July 2.
Podmore said while his group has no money, it hopes to raise at least half a million dollars.
The plebiscite on the 2010 Games is being held February 22.
