Wu Ching-kuo, Taiwan’s representative to the International Olympic Committee, said that Taipei is unlikely to share the 2008 Summer Games with China because the current Olympic charter would not allow it.
There has been speculation that Taiwan might hold one or two events when Beijing won the bid for the 2008 Games. The Olympic official said Taipei probably wouldn’t be a co-host because IOC president Jacques Rogge said recently that only one city could hold the Games. And “he (Rogge) is sticking to that”, Wu said.
Wu said that another problem is that Beijing wants Taipei to acknowledge that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China before any agreement to share the Olympics. Taiwan’s government refuses to accept the so-called “one-China principle”.
