According to a new poll by Corporate Research Associates released Wednesday, seventy two per cent of residents support Halifax’s 2014 Commonwealth Games bid, slightly lower than a Nova Scotia poll done by the same company in November and December which had 79 per cent of Nova Scotian’s supporting the bid.
Peter MacIntosh, CRA’s vice president of public affairs, said the numbers show metro residents think the Games are affordable, despite critics who complain there isn’t enough information about the total cost.
He said, “people see it as a great opportunity. They see that in the long run it’s going to be a job creator; this is not going to be a money-losing event”.
CRA surveyed 400 metro adults between Feb. 1 and 7 as part of its Halifax urban report.
Resident Bruce DeVenne, one of the most vocal opponents of the bid, said Wednesday the people polled must not know much about the bid. “You’ve got to ask people ‘Do you know about this?’ An informed public would not support the Games”.
