A feasibility study, jointly funded by three levels of government, will look at whether Halifax Nova Scotia can offer sufficient accommodations and transportation to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The study could be complete by the end of June.
The study, which could cost up to $500,000, will also look at if the Canadian city can afford to make the bid.
Winning the bid would give Halifax a much-needed large stadium, indoor arena, new track and field facilities, a new Olympic-sized swimming pool, a diving pool and a velodrome.
If the study concludes the city would make a viable host, it would have to make a presentation to Ottawa, along with other Canadian cities vying for the Games, from which one nominee would be chosen as the Canadian candidate.
Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly said indications to date are “positive”, but there’s been no decision made as of yet.
The city lost its bid for the Games in 1987.
