Sports Council Supports Abuja 2014 Commonwealth Bid

The Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA) has thrown its weight behind Abuja’s bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

This Day reports that Alhaji Abba Yola, Special Adviser to Sports Minister Bala Ka’oje, made the announcement Wednesday at the special meeting in Algiers, Algeria of the task force on relations between the governments and international sports federation.

At the meeting all African countries were asked to campaign for the Games as a way of bringing development to sports and tourism on the continent.

A draft of the resolution reads, “Ministers in charge of sports and representatives of Africa sports institutions of the SCSA met in Algiers and adopted the motion giving full support to Nigeria’s bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Abuja, Nigeria”.

Yola said that at the meeting the Sports Minister gave assurances that the country has put together the necessary machinery in motion to ensure a successful Commonwealth Games if Nigeria won the bid. He said that more than 20 letters of support from heads of governments across Africa were received by the presidency and have been forwarded to the bid committee.
