Some Hostages Kidnapped At Olympic Meeting Released

Six of the more than 30 people kidnapped at an Iraqi Olympic Committee meeting Saturday were released Sunday.

The Associated Press reports that six hostages were left blindfolded and unharmed in Baghdad’s Baladiyat neighbourhood, according to Iraq’s Sport Journalist Union. A former member of Iraq’s Olympic Committee Nashat Mahir al-Salman, 75, was the first hostage to be dropped in the neighbourhood. He is also an adviser to Iraq’s Olympic Committee.

Hours later Baghdad soccer coach Ahmed Subhi and four security guards were released. Following the kidnapping Saturday the bodies of two bodyguards were reportedly found dumped on the street.

There is no word on the fate of the other hostages, including the head of the Iraqi Olympic Committee.
